Frequently Asked Questions

Curious about Korean naming customs? Here are the answers to the most common questions we get from K-Pop fans and learners.

General & Usage

Q.Is this Korean Name Generator free to use?โ–ผ
A.Yes! MeKorean is 100% free to use. You can generate unlimited names, check their meanings, and even create a 'Persona Card' without paying anything.
Q.How does the AI determine my Korean name?โ–ผ
A.We don't just pick random names. Our algorithm considers your Gender, Birth Year (for era-appropriate trends), and desired 'Vibe' (Image). It matches these inputs with real census data from Korea to find a name that fits you naturally.
Q.Can I use this name legally or for my passport?โ–ผ
A.Yes, the names generated are real, standard Korean names. However, for legal name changes or official documents, we verify that you check with a legal professional or Korean consulate, as romanization rules (English spelling) can vary strictly.

Korean Naming Culture

Q.Why are most Korean names 3 syllables?โ–ผ
A.A typical Korean name consists of a 1-syllable Surname (Family Name) and a 2-syllable Given Name. For example, in 'Kim Min-jun', 'Kim' is the family name and 'Min-jun' is the given name. 2-syllable or 4-syllable names exist but are rare.
Q.What is 'Hanja' and why does it matter?โ–ผ
A.Hanja refers to Chinese characters used in Korean names. While the name is written in Hangul (Korean alphabet), each syllable usually has a Hanja backing it to give it meaning. For example, 'Min' could mean 'Clever' (ๆ•) or 'Sky' (ๆ—ป) depending on the Hanja chosen.
Q.Can I choose my own Surname (Family Name)?โ–ผ
A.In Korea, surnames are inherited from the father. However, if you are a foreigner choosing a Korean name, you are free to pick any surname you like! 'Kim', 'Lee', and 'Park' are the most common, but you can choose 'Choi', 'Jung', 'Yoon', or even rarer ones.

Technical & Accuracy

Q.Are the names generated 'Male' or 'Female'?โ–ผ
A.We strictly categorize names based on usage data. Some names like 'Ji-woo' or 'Ha-eun' can be unisex, but we generally filter them by the gender you select to ensure you don't end up with a name that sounds 'too masculine' or 'too feminine' unexpectedly.
Q.Why do some names sound similar to English names?โ–ผ
A.This is intentional! Many modern Korean names (like 'Jae-in' -> Jane, 'Yu-jin' -> Eugene, 'Ian' -> Ian) are popular specifically because they work well globally. You can interpret them as 'Global Korean Names'.
Q.My name has different spellings (Woo-jin vs Wu-jin). Which is right?โ–ผ
A.Both are correct! Romanization (writing Korean in English) has variations. 'Woo-jin' is the traditional spelling, while 'U-jin' follows the strict Revised Romanization rules. We generally recommend the spelling that looks most natural to English speakers.
