The normal flow
- Confirm line number or name and its color before the gate.
- Use the next major station or 종착 direction to choose the platform.
- Follow 환승 and the new line color at interchanges.
- Choose the destination's exit number before leaving the paid area.
- Recheck street direction at the top of the exit.

A station can be the right station and still produce a long street-level detour. Exit numbers are part of the route, especially at stations connected to underground malls or multiple blocks.
Choose a platform by direction, not intuition
Confirm the line number or line name and color first. Then check the direction board for a station that lies ahead on your route. Korean signs use 방면 for “toward.” A platform can serve one direction only, both directions from different sides, or several branches; the arrow and next-station list settle the choice.
At a branch line, trains on the same platform may terminate at different places. Compare the train's destination display with the route app before boarding. If you entered the wrong side, do not cross tracks or use an emergency gate; ask staff how to change platforms within the station.
Treat a transfer as a new navigation task
환승 signs keep you inside the paid system while moving to another line. Follow the target line number and color, not 출구. Large interchanges can require several corridors, escalators, or a long walk. Continue until the new platform's direction signs appear.
Some route planners show the best carriage position for a transfer or exit. This can save time, but it is optional. The reliable sequence is line, direction, then platform. If the transfer gate asks you to tap again, use the same transport card and follow the marked route.
Make the exit number part of the address
Before leaving the platform area, find the destination's recommended exit number. Station maps list nearby streets, buildings, bus stops, and landmarks for each exit. 출구 with a number is more useful than simply following the nearest way out.
At street level, orient again. An exit can face away from the final destination or emerge inside a building. Keep the Korean place name and road address available. Elevator routes can lead to a different exit number, so follow 엘리베이터 signs and recheck the street map after reaching ground level.
