The normal flow
- Look for counter seats, one-person tables, or individual bowl dishes.
- Check the menu for 1인분, 2인 이상, or 1인 1메뉴 conditions.
- Tell staff 한 명이에요 before joining a waitlist or taking a seat.
- Keep a nearby alternative instead of pressuring a restaurant with a fixed minimum.

A refusal is often about the cooking format, serving minimum, or peak-time table use—not about solo diners in general. The same restaurant may seat one person at lunch but not during a busy dinner service.
Choose formats built for one
Rice bowls, noodle shops, soup restaurants, kimbap shops, food courts, and many quick-service restaurants naturally sell one complete dish at a time. Counter seating, partitioned seats, and a kiosk are strong signs that the service flow handles one diner efficiently.
Shared barbecue, large hot pots, and table-cooked dishes can be different. The menu may price meat by 1인분 but still require two servings of the same category. A table with four chairs does not override that minimum. Read the order note before waiting.
Ask clearly at the entrance
Say 한 명이에요—“One person”—before staff assigns a table. 혼자예요—“I am alone”—also works, but party size is the information the host needs. If there is a digital waiting list, check whether 인원 asks for the number of people and whether a Korean phone number is required for the alert.
합석 means shared seating. Some traditional or busy restaurants may place unrelated diners at the same large table. If that is uncomfortable, ask 합석이에요? before sitting. A polite exit is fine when the format does not fit.
Use timing as part of the plan
A small restaurant may welcome solo diners during off-peak hours but protect larger tables during a queue. Arriving before the lunch rush or after the first dinner wave can make seating easier. This is a practical capacity decision rather than a published universal rule.
Keep one backup that uses counter or kiosk service. Map reviews can mention 혼밥, but review conditions change and a single comment is not a guarantee. Confirm the current menu and entrance signs when you arrive.
