Field note

Card prices, pass coverage, and accepted reload methods can change. Use this page for the workflow, then compare the live official card table for the exact date and cities of your trip.

Choose stored value or a pass

A standard Tmoney or compatible reloadable card is flexible: add value and pay per trip across supported transport. Visitor or city passes can offer time-limited use within a defined network. A pass is not automatically better; compare its coverage, activation rule, excluded lines, and the number of rides you expect.

Korea Tourism Organization maintains a comparison of current transport cards and visitor options. Read the official table close to travel because products and conditions change. Keep the physical card cost separate from the value loaded onto it.

Buy and reload with a supported method

Cards are commonly sold at participating convenience stores and station service points. 충전 adds value and 잔액 shows the balance. Purchase and reload payment options can differ from ordinary retail payment; a store that accepts an overseas card for snacks may still require another method for transit value.

Ask 교통카드 충전해 주세요 and state the amount if using a staffed counter. At a machine, select the card-reload function, place the card on the marked area, and leave it there until completion. Check the displayed balance before walking away.

Tap consistently

Use one card per passenger. Tap at the subway gate when entering and leaving. On buses, tap when boarding and again when getting off so the fare and transfer can be calculated correctly. Hold the card still until the reader confirms it; rapid repeated taps can make the status unclear.

For a transfer, use the same card throughout the journey. A low-balance or error message should be resolved at a station machine, service office, or staffed store. Do not force a gate. Keep the card away from a stack of other contactless cards to avoid reading the wrong one.
